Border Gateway Protocol

  • BGP is a routing protocol used by autonomous systems (ASes) to exchange routing information.
  • It is the most scalable of all routing protocols.
  • BGP uses a hierarchical routing model with a local routing table and a global routing table.
  • The main BGP process decides if any of the neighbor’s new routes are preferred to routes already in the Loc-RIB.
  • Communities are attribute tags that can be applied to incoming or outgoing prefixes to achieve common goals.
  • BGP Extended Community Attribute was added in 2006 to extend the range of such attributes and provide a community attribute structuring.
  • Route reflectors (RRs) reduce the number of connections required in an AS, providing added iBGP scalability.
  • RRs are a pure performance-enhancing technique, while confederations can also be used to implement more fine-grained policy.
