Science and technology studies (STS) is an interdisciplinary field that examines the creation, development, and consequences of science and technology in their historical, cultural, and social contexts.
STS emerged from the confluence of a variety of disciplines and disciplinary subfields in the 1960s and 1970s.
Important key points in the development of STS include the «turn to technology» in the mid-1980s and the rise of ecology, nature, and materiality in general.
STS studies focus on social constructions, material semiotics, sociotechnical imaginaries, sociotechnical systems theory, technoscience, technosocial, deliberative democracy, and the tragedy of the commons.
