Virasena

  • Acharya Virasena was a Digambara monk, mathematician, and Jain philosopher. 
  • He was known as a famous orator and accomplished poet, and his most reputed work is the Jain treatise Dhavala. 
  • Virasena was a noted mathematician, giving derivations for the volume of a frustum and the approximate formula for the circumference of a circle. 
  • He was proficient in astrology, grammar, logic, mathematics, and prosody. 
  • Virasena wrote Dhavala, a commentary on the Jain canon Shatakhandagama, and started the work on Jayadhavalaa, which was completed by his disciples. 
  • He was among the jewels of the Rashtrakuta king Amoghavarsha, and his lineage started with Chandrasena and included six disciples.
